History of The Share Center
The Community Share Center was opened on the first Saturday in November 2010. The Center is located in the white building next to the Chestertown Community United Methodist Church and is sponsored by the church. The purpose of the Share Center is to provide a place for people to donate items they no longer need and to find needed items. Due to a very generous donation we were able to purchase shelves and clothes racks to display the items that are donated.
The Center is open to all residents of neighboring towns. We have had very generous donations of items from many area communities. Two walls were removed so the Center could be expanded to hold the donated items, and to create a less crowded and more inviting space. There is never a charge for any item taken from the Share Center. We accept almost everything that is clean and usable except large furniture as we have a limited space. We also do not have room to store out of season items. We do accept monetary donations that we use for cleaning supplies for the Center and personal care items, such as deodorant, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, baby lotion, baby wipes, paper products, etc. that are not often donated. We maintain a list of specific items requested and try to fulfill those requests if we can.
In 2014 we began a Book Bag Project for the neediest children in the North Warren Central School District. Lists of school supplies that are needed at each grade level are obtained from the school. Working with the Food Pantries of Horicon and Chester, the towns within the North Warren School District, we get a list of the children whose families they serve. We don’t ask for names or ages, only gender and grade level. Then we purchase and fill back packs for each of those children. The filled back packs are delivered to the respective Food Pantries in early August for them to pass out. Each back pack is labeled with the grade level.
The Community Share enter is open on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm. It is staffed by volunteers and funded by donations. Our volunteers include members of our congregation as well as members of the community.
